Research and experience clearly indicate that the biggest single factor related to under-performance in international assignments is the inability of the transferee (and more commonly the transferee's family) to adjust to the culture of the host country.

To be most effective, this process must commence as early as possible in the career planning cycle.  Ideally, as soon as an employee is identified as having the potential for an international assignment, is placed in a "high potential group" or the like, or self-nominates for consideration for an international assignment, the process of developing cross-cultural competence should commence.  It is important also to involve the employee's spouse/partner in the development process from the beginning.
